The program in Matola started in 2006 with the World Relief Tshembeka program. Volunteers involved in the program were trained on home based care for those affected by HIV/AIDS. The AfricaWorks Animal Husbandry program was introduced to provide a sustainable source of income for the volunteers that were taking care of HIV/AIDS orphan’s & sick. The program started with 21 clients owning 7 chicken houses with the capacity of 200 to 250 chickens per chicken house.

Currently we have 10 chicken houses owned by 18 clients and have built and increased the capacity in all chicken houses to 400 birds. The number of volunteers per chicken houses was also reduced to an average of 2, in order to maximize profits. During this same period, one of our successful clients Piedade Monteiro was issued a loan to begin a stock feed business providing the feed to all other clients in Matola.
